Sublime Terminal

“The strange feeling of being between departure and return. In an airport terminal, thinking back on a summer spent in Europe, the landscapes running through my head, the people left behind, and that sense of displacement you can sometimes feel when you live overseas.”

Sublime Terminal is a series of paintings inspired by memories of places, people and moments from my travels in Europe.

Mostly small to medium-sized abstract landscapes. Some paintings begin with an image, while others simply take shape from the memory of a place, a person or an emotion.

I needed to move away from the idea of preparing “the next exhibition”, the pressure that comes with it, and the social noise that goes along with it. I wanted to stay focused on my creative process while continuing to develop my own pictorial language, one painting at a time.

Every Wednesday for the next 10 weeks, I'll be releasing a new painting at 7 pm Sydney time (AEDT).

Who I am

I'm Joël, painter born in France and based in Sydney, Australia. I mainly work in oils.

Before painting, I was doing photography, a practice I left behind now, but which gradually led me towards painting around 2020. I'm largely self-taught, although over the years I've also studied painting techniques and art history. Since then, I've had the opportunity to exhibit in France and Australia.

Je m'appelle Joël, peintre né en France et installé à Sydney. Je travaille principalement à l'huile. Avant la peinture, je faisais de la photographie, qui m'a progressivement mené vers la peinture autour de 2020. Essentiellement autodidacte, j'ai aussi suivi des formations en techniques picturales et en histoire de l'art. J'ai exposé en France et en Australie.
